Chicago Seasonal Festivals
St. Patrick’s Day Parades
March
Downtown and South Side
No one celebrates St. Patty’s Day like Chicago. Well, except maybe Ireland. But when you’re on this side of the Emerald Isle, there’s no better city to spend the holiday then Chicago. In fact, Chicagoans are so attached to their Irish heritage that we stretch the festivities over two separate parades – one in downtown and one on the South Side.
The downtown parade is held on Columbus Drive from Balbo Drive to Monroe Drive. Thousands gather along the sidelines to cheer on the procession and see the groups of kilt-wearing bagpipers, mounted guard, dance troupes, school bands, city officials and decorated floats. Before the parade begins, people hover on the Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive bridges to catch a glimpse of the traditional dyeing of the river green. The South Side parade heads down Western Avenue from 103rd Street to 115th Street, through the neighborhoods of Beverly and Morgan Park.
Chicago Blues Festival
Early JuneGrant Park
Chicago Blues Festival is the best attended music event in the city. It attracts more than 750,000 visitors over the course of four days and the concerts are free to the public. People are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets to stake out a spot on the grass and enjoy the most soulful sounds the Blues has to offer. From early afternoon until sunset, a full schedule of blues bands and individual singers perform on the multitude of stages spread out across Grant Park. Main acts are held at the Petrillo Music Shell which usually hosts shows by the likes of B.B. King and Koko Taylor.
Taste of Chicago
Grant Park
Around Fourth of July
For years foodies and families have come from other cities and states to experience this incredible celebration of Chicago’s culinary specialties. For ten days Grant Park is packed with rows of food tents, live performance stages, demonstration platforms, sports showcases, kids’ booths, and activity stands. Admission to the grounds is free, but in order to sample any of the delicious dishes guests need to purchase tickets. Tickets can be used for little “taster” bites from any of the restaurant vendors set up on the premises or, for a few more tickets, you can get a full-size portion of your favorite menu items.
In addition to being the biggest outdoor food festival in the country, the Taste of Chicago brings an impressive schedule of bands and musicians to Grant Park every summer. The concerts are completely free, but the trick is getting there early enough to get a spot to see the stage. With a few million people attending Taste of Chicago annually, it’s not surprising the performance areas fill up with fans so quickly. Plus the headliners are often popular singers and entertainers, such as Stevie Wonder, who draw a crowd no matter where they play.
Chicago Air and Water Show
North Avenue Beach Boat House
Mid-August
The Chicago Air and Water Show has been around for half a century and each year the stunts just get better and better. The main action takes place out in front of North Avenue Beach, but the high-flying tricks can been seen from miles up and down the shoreline. Over two million people make their way down to the waterfront for this thrilling weekend-long event. Those with boats of their own head out onto Lake Michigan for prime viewing spots and folks on land pick places on the sand to unfold their beach chairs and settle in for the show.
Fighter jets, bi-planes, parachuters, speedboats, water skiers and many more perform outrageously incredible feats for the shoreline full of spectators. The entire event is free to the public and a concert is scheduled for the North Avenue Beach Boat House after the headlining daredevils do their thing. Even if you can’t get over to the water’s edge, plenty of octane-infused exploits can be witnessed from the upper floors of Chicago’s high-rise skyscrapers.
Magnificent Mile Lights Festival
North Michigan Avenue
Just before Thanksgiving
You know the holiday shopping season has arrived in Chicago when the Magnificent Mile lights up with over a million tiny bulbs and stores extend their hours for the crush of present-purchasing to come. Countless twinkling lights illuminate the trees up and down North Michigan Avenue and rows of booths with traditional sweets, kids’ activities and other goodies are set up for the event. Stages with music and performances provide live entertainment and everyone is invited to join in a spirited round of caroling. The celebration finishes off with a fireworks display above the Chicago River.
The Lights Festival is a day-long event in the heart of Chicago’s Mag Mile retail district (Michigan Avenue between Oak Street and Wacker Drive).
