Back of the

As one of the original communities of the American Industrial Revolution, this Chicago neighborhood is all about change, progress and diversity. And it shows in Back of the Yards' eclectic mix of residents, artfully crafted parks, dozens of schools, wide ranging architecture, and inexpensive real estate prices.
The main draw to this Chicago neighborhood just might be its plentiful green space. Davis Square Park on South Marshfield Avenue is the community core of Back of the Yards. The place offers an old fieldhouse, built in the early 1900s, and just like its neighborhood, the historic fieldhouse has expanded over the years to make room for better things. Check out the building's up-to-date fitness center, gymnasium and youth boxing league. Or rent out one of its meeting rooms or assembly halls for your next neighborhood gathering. In addition to it being a great place to get physically fit, Davis Square is also an ideal spot to relax and catch a league ballgame in the summer. Located just five blocks south of Davis is another neighborhood commons called Cornell Square Park. This recreational spot is similar to Davis with its baseball fields, walking trails and spray pool (sorry mom and dad, this one's just for the kids). With both parks offering top-notch leisure facilities, the choice between the two is simply a matter of proximity.
Of course, when Back of the Yards residents are looking for optimum open area, nothing tops Sherman Park on West 52nd Street. This outdoor locale is by far the neighborhood's largest park and is easily the most popular with the local sporting enthusiasts. Even those who don't reside in the Back of the Yards neighborhood come to Sherman Park for day-trips and community events. The grounds were designed by the Olmsted brothers, who've taken their landscaping genius to a number of famed spots in the country, including Central Park in New York City. That said, it's not surprising you find many awe-inspiring features here, like a large pond with an island in the middle, well-maintained walking and jogging trails, and a fieldhouse used for public gatherings.
Back of the Yards' residential streets are mainly single-family homes with some newer constructions here and there. The real estate market includes traditional bungalows, raised ranches, brick flats and multi-unit buildings. With its individual front and back yards, secure fences and garage parking, this Chicago neighborhood is a nesting destination for families who want space and privacy but don't want to spend a fortune to get it. Depending on the property, real estate prices vary widely in this neighborhood. You can get a detached single-family home with three bedrooms for as little as $65K, but if you want something newer with added amenities, you're looking at a serious price jump. Recent development has made way for condo conversions and brand new residences, and these more modern, luxury dwellings sell for closer to four- or five-hundred thousand dollars.
