East Rogers Park
As Chicago’s farthest north side neighborhood, you might expect East Rogers Park to feel more like a suburb, but this energetic area is far from it. One thing that keeps the neighborhood alive is Loyola University. The distinguished Chicago school offers 69 undergrad programs, 36 doctoral programs and pulls in over 15,000 students each year.
Thanks to its young population, East Rogers Park is home to some of the hippest Chicago hangouts. Coffee houses, vegetarian restaurants and independent bookshops are among the best of these. Head over to Ennui Café and you’ll find groups of Loyola students mixed and mingled with professors, businessmen on BlackBerries and creative types with sketchpads. The place also has a large sidewalk café where you can enjoy your java and pastries in the sun.
When you’re ready to fuel up on some hearty fare, head over to Heartland Café on Glenwood. This vegetarian restaurant, known for its loyal crowd of activists and artists, serves up heaping plates of your favorite meat-free treats. They also have cheap drinks and free concerts throughout the week.
Because East Rogers Park only really started to take its present shape in the past 30 years or so, plenty of the neighborhood’s architecture is contemporary. But you’ll still find Victorians, older brick buildings and vintage courtyards intertwined with the more modern edifices. One perk of the neighborhood’s recent popularity is the establishment if its new entertainment and theatre district. Up-and-coming actors will be pleased with the array of troupes from the BoHo Theatre Company to the Raven Theatre, with plenty of show houses in between. Coinciding with the constant development of fresh and trendy businesses and residences is a healthy effort by East Rogers Park locals and organizations to renovate and preserve the historic homes. The community here also recently banned high-rise construction to protect lake views. The news is a plus for those who have already scored homes with sightlines to the water!
No matter where you live in this Chicago neighborhood, shorefront parks and beaches are not far away. The list of recreational spots is seemingly endless, but each location is as treasured as the next because the community of East Rogers Park is full of outdoor enthusiasts. Hartigan Park and Beach is a small pocket of sand that leads to the larger stretch of beach at Loyola Park. This popular lakeside hangout spans eight blocks and includes amenities like a fieldhouse, baseball diamond and basketball court. Inland neighborhood parks include Touhy Park, Pottawatomie Park and Paschen Park, which are all situated near the western edge of East Rogers Park.
Home buyers looking to purchase property in East Rogers Park, have plenty of condos, flats and single-family homes to choose from. There’s the option of the neighborhood’s more modern architecture or nestle into history with one of East Rogers Park’s rehabbed structures. Many of these residential buildings include extras like exercise equipment, tennis courts, parking and bonus storage. One bedroom condos in this north side Chicago community run around $150,000, while two and three bedroom units average in the low to mid $200,000s. Detached single-family homes can range anywhere from $350,000 to $800,000, with some reaching the millions.
