Streeterville
This lakeshore community is one of the fastest developing neighborhoods in Chicago’s history and is now one of the fastest moving, thanks to a constant rotation of tourists. While Streeterville is comprised of commercial buildings, residential housing and tourist attractions, it’s the latter that takes the lead.
With so many historic sites, galleries and famous shopping centers, Steeterville is by far one of Chicago’s busiest neighborhoods. One destination appeals to visitors and locals alike, and that’s the John Hancock Center. This sleek, black multi-use building offers the best views of the city (next to the Sears Tower) from its 94th floor observatory, and its lofty Signature Room restaurant gives “upscale” dining a whole new meaning. The sightlines from this swanky lounge and grill are spectacular and a meal from this height is well worth the splurge. Don’t feel like breaking the bank on a whole dinner? Just pop up for a nightcap. The drinks are still expensive, but that romantic panoramic view pays for itself.
Streeterville is also home to the Tribune Tower, where the Chicago Tribune Newspaper has its headquarters. The building’s gothic architecture has made it a popular backdrop for movies, like the new Batman series, and the small labeled rocks from locations around the world at the tower’s base make it an interesting sightseeing stop. Keeping in line with the many tourist attractions, you’ll also find the Museum of Contemporary Art in the middle of this Chicago neighborhood. Not only does the venue house regular exhibitions, but they also host modern film, music and dance performances.
As you may have guessed, given its countless attractions and activities, Streeterville doesn’t offer the most space for housing in the city. And because the neighborhood’s exclusive selection of properties are so close to so much, including Lake Michigan, a home here will cost you a pretty penny, or rather, millions of pretty pennies. One bedrooms are the most affordable real estate options in Streeterville, selling anywhere between $250,000 and $600,000. But it’s the lush penthouse pads and luxury high-rise condominiums that will really set you back. The average attached home sale price in Streeterville is in the mid to high $400,000s while detached single-family residences have an average selling price of around $2.2 million.
